Pirates reliever Chris Devenski suspended three games for intentionally throwing at opposing batter

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Chris Devenski has been suspended for three games and fined for intentionally throwing at Cincinnati Reds rookie Sal Stewart during a game. The incident occurred in the seventh inning of the Pirates’ 17-7 victory at PNC Park, leading to Devenski’s ejection. Pirates manager Don Kelly was also suspended for one game and fined. Devenski’s suspension is scheduled to begin as the Pirates face the Arizona Diamondbacks, though it may be delayed if he appeals. The fines for both Devenski and Kelly were not disclosed. QUESTION: Why do you think sports leagues impose suspensions and fines for actions like intentionally throwing at a player?
