Confirmed hantavirus cases linked to suspected cluster rise to 5, WHO says

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the number of hantavirus cases aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius has increased to five. Two new cases, in serious condition, were medically evacuated from the ship. These patients, along with an asymptomatic individual linked to a deceased German national, are being transferred to the Netherlands for treatment. WHO is collaborating with the ship’s operators and national health authorities to monitor and manage the situation. The virus involved is the Andes hantavirus, known for potential person-to-person transmission. Three deaths have been recorded, and the public health risk is considered low. The outbreak highlights the importance of international cooperation in managing infectious diseases. QUESTION: How might the potential for person-to-person transmission of the Andes hantavirus influence future travel and health protocols on cruise ships?
