Spain readies for evacuations as a hantavirus-hit cruise ship heads for Canary Islands

Health workers in protective gear arrived to evacuate patients from the MV Hondius cruise ship in Cape Verde, as the vessel, affected by a hantavirus outbreak, headed for the Canary Islands. Spanish authorities prepared to receive over 140 passengers and crew, with the ship expected to reach Tenerife soon. The U.S. and U.K. are arranging flights to repatriate their citizens. At least three passengers have died, but the World Health Organization considers the public risk low, as hantavirus is not easily spread between people. Health officials are tracking passengers who disembarked before the outbreak was detected. A flight attendant who had contact with an infected passenger tested negative for the virus. The situation highlights the importance of quick response and contact tracing in managing infectious disease outbreaks. QUESTION: How might the experience of being on a quarantined cruise ship during an outbreak affect passengers’ views on travel and safety in the future?
