Huge landslide created a 500-meter-high tsunami in a major tourist area

In August 2025, a massive rockslide in Alaska’s Tracy Arm fjord caused a huge tsunami, the second highest ever recorded, with waves reaching 481 meters. Fortunately, it occurred early in the morning, so no one was harmed. This event highlights the dangers of landslide-generated tsunamis, which can be more violent than those caused by earthquakes. The rockslide was triggered by the retreat of the South Sawyer Glacier, a result of climate change. Scientists used satellite images to study the event, emphasizing the impact of a warming climate on natural disasters. QUESTION: How might the retreat of glaciers due to climate change impact communities living near fjords and other coastal areas?
