Pentagon will review Senator Mark Kelly’s comments about US weapon stockpiles, Hegseth says

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has urged the Pentagon to review comments made by Democratic Senator Mark Kelly regarding US weapons stockpiles. Hegseth accused Kelly of disclosing classified information during a television appearance, where Kelly expressed concerns about the depletion of munitions following the conflict with Iran. Kelly, however, denied revealing any classified details, stating that the information was discussed in a public hearing. He highlighted that replenishing these stockpiles could take years and criticized the lack of clarity from the administration on the war’s objectives. The Pentagon has not confirmed an investigation into Kelly’s statements, referring instead to Hegseth’s remarks. This controversy arises amid ongoing legal disputes between Kelly and the Pentagon, with Kelly previously suing the government over alleged retaliatory actions for his criticism of the Trump administration. A federal judge had temporarily blocked the Pentagon’s attempt to demote Kelly, a decision currently under appeal. QUESTION: How might the public’s trust in government transparency and accountability be affected by disputes over classified information and military decisions?
