Trump proposes gas tax holiday, but savings may be limited

The Trump administration’s proposal to temporarily suspend the federal gasoline tax aims to provide some relief to U.S. drivers facing high fuel costs, but experts suggest the impact would be modest. Gas prices have surged since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, with the national average reaching $4.52 per gallon. The federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel, and suspending it would lower prices slightly. However, the relief would be limited as recent price hikes have far exceeded the tax amount. The suspension would require congressional approval, which may be challenging due to political divisions and upcoming elections. Additionally, it could deplete the Highway Trust Fund, costing the government about $2.1 billion monthly. Some states, like Georgia and Indiana, have already waived local fuel taxes, offering more significant savings. QUESTION: How might the suspension of the federal gas tax impact the funding and maintenance of U.S. highways and infrastructure?
