Jury orders Boeing to pay $49.5 million to family of 737 MAX crash victim

A federal jury in Chicago awarded $49.5 million to the family of Samya Stumo, a 24-year-old woman who died in the 2019 crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, involving a Boeing 737 MAX jet. This verdict is one of the last cases related to two tragic crashes that killed 346 people. Boeing had already accepted responsibility, so the trial focused on the compensation amount. The jury granted $21 million for Stumo’s experience during the crash, $16.5 million for the family’s loss of companionship, and $12 million for their grief. Stumo’s family plans to seek punitive damages against Boeing executives and suppliers. Previously, another jury awarded over $28 million to the family of another crash victim. Boeing expressed deep regret for the losses and acknowledged families’ rights to pursue claims in court. QUESTION: How might the outcome of this case influence the way companies handle safety and accountability in the future?
