Long Island Rail Road workers go on strike, halting busiest US commuter rail system

Workers on New York’s Long Island Rail Road have gone on strike, halting the busiest commuter rail system in North America. The strike was initiated by labor unions representing about half of the system’s 7,000 workers, including engineers and machinists, after failing to reach a new contract with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The dispute centers on wage increases and health care premiums. The MTA claims it met pay demands but wanted new hires to pay higher health care premiums, which the union rejected. The strike affects around 250,000 daily commuters, forcing them to find alternative transportation or work from home. Governor Kathy Hochul criticized union leaders for the disruption and urged commuters to work remotely. The strike also complicates travel for sports fans attending events in Manhattan. QUESTION: How might the strike impact the daily lives of commuters and the overall economy in New York City?
