Trump says Islamic State group leader was killed in a joint US-Nigerian mission

U.S. and Nigerian forces successfully carried out a mission that resulted in the death of Abu Bakr al-Mainuki, a high-ranking leader of the Islamic State group in Nigeria. Announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, the operation targeted al-Mainuki, who was considered a key figure in organizing and financing IS activities and was plotting attacks against the U.S. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu confirmed the strike, which took place in the Lake Chad Basin, also eliminated several of al-Mainuki’s lieutenants. Al-Mainuki, born in Nigeria, had led the IS branch in West Africa since 2018 and was involved in the group’s activities in the Sahel region. This operation marks a significant blow to ISWAP, potentially causing disruption within the group. The mission was part of a U.S.-Nigeria partnership aimed at combating terrorism in the region.
