American Airlines suspends 6 routes because of high jet fuel costs

American Airlines has announced temporary cuts to certain routes due to rising jet fuel costs, a consequence of the ongoing conflict in Iran that has disrupted global oil supplies. The airline will adjust schedules for select routes in August and September, including flights from Los Angeles to Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington Dulles, as well as from Charlotte to Ontario and Sacramento. These changes are not permanent, and affected customers will be rebooked or refunded. Jet fuel typically makes up 25% to 30% of an airline’s expenses, prompting carriers like Delta Airlines and European airlines KLM and Lufthansa to also make adjustments, such as raising baggage fees or cutting routes. This situation highlights the broader impact of geopolitical events on the airline industry and consumer travel. QUESTION: How might the rising costs of jet fuel and subsequent route adjustments influence the future of air travel and its accessibility for people worldwide?
