Raúl Castro turns 95 as Cuba celebrates enigmatic figure

Raúl Castro, who turned 95 on Wednesday, remains a significant figure in Cuba, one of the last communist countries. Known for his role in the 1959 revolution alongside his brother Fidel Castro, Raúl served as Cuba’s president for 12 years after Fidel stepped down. Although he retired from politics in 2021, he still holds influence as the general of Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces and a member of the National Assembly. Born in 1931 in eastern Cuba, Raúl became involved in politics early, opposing the Batista dictatorship and participating in the revolution that eventually led to Batista’s overthrow. As a leader, he was praised for his contributions to Cuba’s freedom and dignity.
