At the center of our galaxy lies a massive black hole, Sagittarius A*, which is over a trillion times heavier than Earth. Scientists have recently discovered that this black hole emits a hot breeze, challenging the idea that black holes are completely isolated from their surroundings. Using data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, researchers found a cone-shaped cavity in the gas around the black hole, suggesting that as gas gets close to the black hole, it heats up and forms a disk. Some of this gas is then expelled as a wind. This discovery is significant because it provides new insights into the behavior of black holes and their interaction with the environment.
QUESTION: How might understanding the behavior of black holes change our perception of the universe and our place within it?
