California governor, LA mayoral races still unsettled as vote count continues

California voters are eagerly awaiting the results of key primary elections, including the gubernatorial and Los Angeles mayoral races, as ballot counting continues more than 36 hours after polls closed. Under California’s top-two primary system, the two candidates with the most votes advance to the November general election, regardless of party affiliation. In the governor’s race, Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra appear likely to advance, though Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer is making a late push. Hilton has positioned himself as a candidate for change, while Becerra feels confident about advancing. Several high-profile Democrats have already conceded. In Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass is projected to advance to a runoff election in November, though her opponent remains undetermined. The race presents a rare challenge to an incumbent mayor in the heavily Democratic city. QUESTION: How might the outcome of these elections influence the future political landscape in California?
