Canada backs plan to move whales from shuttered Marineland park to US and Spain

The Canadian government has approved a plan to relocate the last captive whales from Marineland, a closed theme park in Ontario, to aquariums in the U.S. and Spain. This move aims to prevent the euthanasia of 30 belugas and four dolphins. Marineland, which closed in 2024, has faced legal issues over animal care and is now working to transfer its animals and sell its property. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has begun issuing permits for the transfer, expected in the coming months. The whales and dolphins will be relocated to several marine parks, including Shedd Aquarium and SeaWorld. The Canadian government is coordinating with various agencies to ensure a safe transfer, though it hasn’t decided on funding the move. Marineland’s founder passed away in 2018, and the park has been dismantling since his wife’s death in 2024. QUESTION: How might relocating these whales and dolphins to new aquariums impact their well-being and conservation efforts?
