Melinda Gates pledges another $215 million to improve women’s health around the world

Philanthropist Melinda French Gates has committed over $600 million in the past two years to improve women’s health globally, with a recent pledge of $215 million. Her donations focus on enhancing contraceptive access, maternal care, and addressing issues affecting middle-aged women, such as menopause. French Gates, who now operates through her organization Pivotal, emphasizes the importance of women’s health as foundational to their overall well-being. Her strategic funding includes a $40 million donation to Co-Impact for integrating mental health support into maternal care in Africa and a $10 million contribution to The Menopause Society to improve menopause care in the U.S. Despite women comprising half the global population, only 2% of private healthcare funds address their specific health issues. French Gates aims to highlight these neglected areas and inspire other donors and governments to contribute. Dr. Stephanie Faubion of The Menopause Society notes the critical lack of menopause-competent clinicians in the U.S., and the donation will help expand educational resources to underserved areas. QUESTION: How might increased funding and attention to women’s health issues, like menopause, change the healthcare landscape for future generations?
