Palestinians suffer from lack of proper toilets across Gaza’s vast tent cities

In the tent camps of southern Gaza, families like Mostafa Shaaban’s face dire sanitation challenges. Shaaban, displaced from Rafah, constructed a makeshift toilet in his tent to avoid the degrading communal latrines shared by hundreds. These communal facilities lack privacy and pose safety concerns, especially for women at night. The absence of proper sanitation has led to unhygienic conditions, with sewage pooling around the densely packed tents. Over 80% of Gaza’s sewage systems have been destroyed due to ongoing conflict, and aid efforts to improve sanitation are limited. Reconstruction is stalled, partly due to political disagreements. Shaaban’s wife, Iman, emphasizes the urgent need for clean facilities, highlighting the basic human right to sanitation. QUESTION: How might the lack of proper sanitation facilities impact the health and well-being of families living in these conditions?
