1 killed, 22 injured in Virginia church tent collapse

A tragic incident occurred at East Lake Community Church in Moneta, Virginia, when a tent collapsed during an outdoor service due to severe weather, resulting in one death and 22 injuries. The collapse happened as a storm with heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds swept through the area, causing the tent to fail despite having passed a recent inspection. Eleven people were hospitalized, while another eleven were treated for minor injuries on-site. The event was part of the church’s 20th-anniversary celebration, and Pastor Troy Keaton expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a church member. The incident was classified as a mass casualty event by Bedford County officials. Moneta is located about 40 miles southwest of Lynchburg, Virginia. QUESTION: How might communities better prepare for unexpected severe weather events to ensure the safety of large gatherings?
