Judge rules Trump can stage UFC fights on White House’s South Lawn this weekend

A federal judge has allowed a UFC event to proceed on the White House South Lawn, celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. Judge Amit Mehta ruled that the plaintiffs, who opposed the event, lacked legal standing and failed to demonstrate irreparable harm. The lawsuit, filed by the Public Integrity Project, argued against the construction of a large steel structure for the event, but the judge noted that any aesthetic harm would be temporary. The White House dismissed the lawsuit as baseless, asserting the event is similar to others held in public spaces. The plaintiffs claimed the event was a private, for-profit venture benefiting Trump. The National Park Service and the Interior Department were named in the lawsuit. Trump, a friend of UFC president Dana White, previously attended a UFC show as president. QUESTION: How might hosting private events on public grounds impact public perception of government transparency and fairness?
