Pope Leo XIV’s flight home from Spain was grounded so the king came to his aid

Pope Leo XIV faced an unexpected travel delay when his chartered Iberia flight experienced a technical issue at Tenerife Norte-Los Rodeos International Airport in Spain. Fortunately, King Felipe VI of Spain offered his private jet to ensure the Pope could return to Rome after his weeklong visit to Spain, which included stops in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands. The Pope’s trip focused on migration issues and the inauguration of the new tower of the Sagrada Familia basilica. The incident marked a rare occurrence of a papal flight requiring a change of planes due to technical problems. In the past, similar issues have occurred, such as during the pontificate of St. John Paul II. Typically, the Italian national carrier ITA Airways handles papal flights, but this time, the Spanish king’s intervention was necessary. QUESTION: How might the Pope’s experience with travel delays influence how people view the challenges of international travel?
