Severe storms, tornadoes slam Midwest, killing at least 1

Severe storms swept through the Midwest, causing widespread damage, power outages, and flight cancellations. The storms resulted in at least one death in Iowa and multiple tornadoes touching down near Chicago. The National Weather Service confirmed four tornadoes, including two rated EF-3 in Kouts, Indiana, and Streator, Illinois. Wind gusts reached up to 75 mph in some areas, leaving over 221,000 customers without power in Illinois. The Storm Prediction Center had upgraded the Chicago area to a level 4 severe risk, a rare occurrence. Survey crews are assessing the damage, particularly in rural areas southwest of Chicago, where many buildings were damaged. In Streator, a tornado caused significant destruction, but no deaths were reported. Emergency personnel acted quickly, and residents were grateful for their safety. The severe weather also disrupted flights at Chicago’s major airports. QUESTION: How might communities better prepare for future severe weather events to minimize damage and ensure safety?
