N.J. students’ rite of passage via the Appalachian Trail

St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey, has an unusual tradition for its freshmen: a five-day hike along the Appalachian Trail. This 55-mile journey serves as a rite of passage for students, many of whom have never experienced hiking or camping before. The trek is designed to challenge the students physically and mentally, fostering resilience and camaraderie among them. With some adult supervision, the students navigate the trail, learning valuable life skills and gaining a sense of accomplishment. This annual event is a significant part of the school’s curriculum, emphasizing personal growth and teamwork outside the traditional classroom setting. QUESTION: How might participating in a challenging outdoor experience like hiking the Appalachian Trail impact a student’s perspective on overcoming obstacles in everyday life?
