Russian priest known as Putin’s “confessor” hit by EU sanctions

The European Union has imposed sanctions on over 80 individuals and entities in response to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Among those targeted is Georgiy Shevkunov, also known as Metropolitan Tikhon, a senior bishop in the Russian Orthodox Church, accused of spreading propaganda to justify the invasion. The sanctions aim to pressure Russia by targeting its military-industrial complex and those involved in funding the war, including propagandists and entities linked to military equipment supply. The measures include asset freezes and travel bans. This move comes as Russia launched missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to urge G7 leaders for increased pressure on Moscow. The sanctions reflect the EU’s strategy to weaken Russia’s war economy, which has already suffered significant financial losses due to Western sanctions. QUESTION: How might the continued imposition of sanctions on Russia influence the global political landscape and international relations in the coming years?
