Teen accused of killing stepsister on cruise to be jailed pending trial

A 16-year-old named Timothy Hudson has been charged with the murder and sexual assault of his 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner, during a family cruise. Initially released under juvenile charges, Hudson is now being tried as an adult for first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. Magistrate Judge Edwin G. Torres ruled that Hudson must remain in custody, citing the severity of the charges and the potential danger he poses to the community. Hudson, who has pleaded not guilty, was transferred to federal custody and will be held at the Miami-Dade County Metro West Detention Center. The incident occurred in November 2025 on a Carnival Cruise Line ship, where prosecutors allege Hudson and Kepner were alone in their cabin when the crime took place. Despite Hudson’s lack of prior criminal history and compliance with previous release conditions, the judge emphasized the gravity of the charges as a reason for his detention. QUESTION: How might the decision to try a juvenile as an adult impact the legal system and society’s view on juvenile crime?
