Proposed White House regulations could kill 5,000 clinical trials, analysis finds

Nearly 5,000 clinical trials, including 1,000 focused on cancer treatments, are at risk of termination due to proposed federal regulations, according to an analysis by Stand Up for Science. These potential cuts could also impact trials related to pediatric, veteran health, and heart disease. The threat arises from a rule proposed by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, which would allow political appointees to have the final say on federal research grants, moving away from the traditional scientific peer review process. The rule aims to counter a perceived “woke” policy agenda and limit international collaboration. Stand Up for Science found that nearly half of the 10,000 clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health could be terminated, especially those involving international elements or using certain “banned words.” Critics argue that this could jeopardize crucial medical advancements and affect thousands of patients. QUESTION: How might the termination of these clinical trials impact future medical advancements and patient care?
