Survey confirms the struggle of working parents: ‘No way to be two things at once’

Amber Petersen, a legal assistant in Mason City, Iowa, faces the common struggle of balancing work and family life. She often has to leave work abruptly when her children need her, but without paid sick leave, she loses income. This challenge is widespread, as a Pew Research Center survey reveals that two-thirds of working mothers and half of working fathers feel they can’t give 100% at home or work. The number of families with both parents working full-time has increased from 31% in 1975 to 52% today, while families with only dads working full-time have decreased. Despite both parents working, many families, like Petersen’s, struggle financially and lack savings. This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by working parents in managing their responsibilities. QUESTION: How might the increasing number of dual-income families impact future workplace policies and family dynamics?
