Voting officials fear DHS may actually be a threat to elections this year

Gary Berntsen, a former CIA operative, continues to promote the debunked theory that Venezuela interfered in the 2020 U.S. election. Despite being dismissed by the FBI, media, and Congress, Berntsen found support from Markwayne Mullin, then a U.S. senator and now Secretary of Homeland Security. Mullin facilitated a meeting for Berntsen to present his claims to President Trump’s team. Mullin has a history of supporting election fraud claims, including voting against certifying the 2020 Electoral College results. This has raised concerns among election officials about the Department of Homeland Security’s role in election security, fearing it may undermine results unfavorable to Trump. Many local officials are hesitant to share voter data with the federal government, worried it could be misused. The current DHS elections point person, Heather Honey, also has a history of spreading election misinformation, further fueling these concerns. QUESTION: How might the spread of election misinformation impact trust in the democratic process among young voters?
