Taiwan says Chinese pressure over the island is the “new normal”

Taiwan’s foreign minister, Lin Chia-Lung, has highlighted China’s increasing efforts to pressure other countries into limiting Taiwan’s participation in international events. This issue came to light when Taiwanese delegates were detained in Kenya and denied entry to an ocean conference, allegedly due to Chinese influence. China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and has been pressuring countries to restrict Taiwan’s international presence. Recently, Taiwan’s president had to alter travel plans to Eswatini after facing similar pressures. In Kenya, Taiwanese delegates were denied access to a conference, leading to criticism from Taiwan’s foreign ministry. China has not responded to these accusations, but it has a history of limiting Taiwan’s international representation, such as in the World Health Organization and the Olympics. Lin expressed concern over China’s influence on developing countries, which often face economic pressure from Beijing. QUESTION: How might China’s actions towards Taiwan influence international relations and global politics in the future?
