Luigi Mangione’s legal team withdraws intention to invoke psychiatric defense

Luigi Mangione’s legal team has decided not to use a psychiatric defense in his trial for the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. This decision was made just a day after initially announcing the intention to use such a defense. By withdrawing this strategy, Mangione no longer needs to provide his psychiatric records to the prosecution. The court has also decided to keep certain legal documents sealed. Previously, the defense had planned to argue that Mangione was under “extreme emotional disturbance” at the time of the crime, which would have meant admitting to the act. Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty, is facing both state and federal charges for the December 2024 incident. His state trial is set to begin on September 8, with a federal trial to follow next year. Additionally, one charge related to ammunition possession has been dismissed. QUESTION: How might the decision to withdraw a psychiatric defense impact the outcome of Mangione’s trial?
