Mourners bury a 6-month-old Ebola victim in the Congo outbreak’s 3rd orphanage death

In eastern Congo, mourners gathered to bury a 6-month-old girl who died from Ebola, marking the third child death at an orphanage amid a challenging outbreak. The Ituri region, where over 90% of cases are reported, faces difficulties as residents clash with healthcare workers over burial practices and the militarized response. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, with no approved treatment or vaccine, has led to 933 confirmed cases and 245 deaths. Health Minister Roger Kamba announced free healthcare in Ituri and doubled bonuses for workers. Despite the outbreak’s rapid spread, it remains less deadly than the 2014 epidemic. The lack of early testing for the Bundibugyo strain contributed to its spread. Alex Lock from the Red Cross urged people not to be indifferent, highlighting the tragedy of the young girl’s death. QUESTION: How might the lack of approved treatments and vaccines for certain diseases impact global health efforts?
