7 killed and dozens injured following series of weekend shootings in Chicago

A series of shootings in Chicago since Friday evening has resulted in at least 38 injuries and seven deaths, leading President Donald Trump to suggest military intervention to address the violence. Trump criticized Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker for not seeking federal help, though Pritzker has consistently opposed such measures. Despite a slight increase in shootings compared to last year, overall violent crime in Chicago has decreased in recent years. The shootings included a tragic incident on Juneteenth, where 12 people were injured when gunfire erupted from an SUV. This violence overshadowed celebrations, including the opening of Barack Obama’s presidential center. Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the violence and promised accountability. QUESTION: How might the ongoing violence in cities like Chicago influence young people’s perceptions of safety and community?
