Trump-backed right-wing lawyer appears to win Colombia’s presidential election

Abelardo De la Espriella, a conservative lawyer with no prior political experience, is poised to become Colombia’s next president after winning 49.7% of the vote in a runoff election. If confirmed, he will defeat left-wing Senator Iván Cepeda. De la Espriella, who holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Colombia, campaigned on a tough-on-crime platform, promising to build 10 mega-prisons inspired by El Salvador’s security policies. His candidacy was endorsed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting the potential for strengthened ties between Colombia and the U.S. However, current President Gustavo Petro has raised concerns about alleged election irregularities. Elizabeth Dickinson from the International Crisis Group noted that Colombians are divided between security measures and social reforms, suggesting the need for unity. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism about future cooperation with De la Espriella’s administration. QUESTION: How might De la Espriella’s presidency impact Colombia’s approach to crime and its relationship with the United States?
