Matt Dunlap wins primary in Maine’s battleground 2nd District

Matt Dunlap emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District after three rounds of ranked-choice voting, as announced by the state’s Secretary of State. This district has been a Republican stronghold, with President Trump winning it in the last three presidential elections. Dunlap, who is currently the state’s auditor, surpassed State Sen. Joe Baldacci after challengers Paige Loud and Jordan Wood were eliminated. The seat is open following Democratic Rep. Jared Golden’s retirement after four terms. Golden, known for his moderate stance, often sided with Republicans on key issues and did not endorse Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Dunlap will face Republican Paul LePage, a former two-term governor, in the November general election. LePage ran unopposed in the GOP primary and has a significant financial advantage. Dunlap’s win was a setback for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which had backed Baldacci. QUESTION: How might the financial disparity between candidates impact the outcome of the general election in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District?
