3 People Have Gotten Cancer-Detecting Implants in Their Brains

A San Francisco startup, Coherence Neuro, is testing a brain implant to detect and treat cancer. The implant, temporarily placed in the brains of three patients during tumor removal surgery in Australia, aims to sense tumor signals and deliver electrical stimulation to prevent growth. This approach is based on the idea that cancerous tissues have unique electrical properties. Coherence’s device, which sits in the skull with threads extending into the brain, could offer a more convenient alternative to existing treatments like the Optune device, which requires patients to shave their heads and carry a battery. The company hopes to initially target glioblastoma, a common and aggressive brain tumor. This innovation could potentially change how brain cancer is treated, offering hope for more effective and less intrusive options. QUESTION: How might advancements in brain implant technology change the future of medical treatments for other diseases?
