All 3 Mamdani-backed candidates projected to win NY primaries

Claire Valdez has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for the 7th Congressional District, according to CBS News projections. She was among several candidates, including Vichal Kumar, Antonio Reynoso, and Julie Won, vying to succeed Rep. Nydia Velazquez, who is retiring. Valdez received an endorsement from Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, while Velazquez supported Reynoso. The district covers parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Across New York, other primary winners include Rep. Thomas Suozzi in NY-03, Rep. Grace Meng in NY-06, Rep. Yvette Clarke in NY-09, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in NY-14, and Rep. Ritchie Torres in NY-15. The Associated Press has projected Thomas DiNapoli as the winner in the Democratic primary for New York City comptroller. In a notable upset, Brad Lander defeated incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman for the Democratic nomination in New York’s 10th Congressional District, which includes Lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. Lander’s victory is significant for progressive Democrats, bolstered by endorsements from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Senator Bernie Sanders. The race between Goldman and Lander highlighted issues such as the U.S. relationship with Israel and Goldman’s ties to the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC. The Department of Justice is investigating an incident involving a Williamsburg coffee shop that refused service to Goldman, labeling him a “genocide enabler.” As polls closed on Primary Day, CBS News New York provided comprehensive coverage of the elections, focusing on races with candidates supported by Mayor Mamdani and key districts in the northern suburbs. QUESTION: How might the outcome of these primary elections influence the political landscape in New York City and beyond?
