Iran’s president heads to Pakistan as US-Iran teams work to finalize a war-ending deal

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian traveled to Pakistan for discussions with officials mediating talks between Tehran and Washington aimed at ending the Middle East conflict. This visit follows high-level negotiations in Switzerland involving US Vice President JD Vance and Iran’s parliamentary speaker. Despite progress, discrepancies have emerged, particularly regarding the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) access to Iranian nuclear sites bombed by the US. Meanwhile, violence erupted in Lebanon, threatening the fragile ceasefire, as Israeli soldiers killed two men in Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa. Iran insists on a full ceasefire in Lebanon as part of any comprehensive deal. Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad, his first since the conflict began, includes meetings with Pakistani leaders to discuss a 60-day diplomatic process aimed at a permanent resolution. Talks also focus on ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open, a crucial oil transit route blocked by Iran during the war. QUESTION: How might the ongoing violence in Lebanon impact the diplomatic efforts to resolve the Middle East conflict?
