Turkey detains 209 in raids in the capital of Ankara ahead of July’s NATO summit

In Ankara, Turkey, security forces conducted extensive raids, detaining over 200 individuals suspected of ties to extremist groups, including the Islamic State, ahead of the upcoming NATO summit. This event, scheduled for July 7-8, will see leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, gather in the Turkish capital. To ensure safety, Turkey plans to implement strict security measures, such as banning demonstrations and restricting access to key areas. The Turkish government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, frequently conducts security operations, having recently detained 324 people linked to the Islamic State. On Tuesday, authorities issued detention orders for 241 suspects, capturing 209 in raids around Ankara. Among those detained were alleged members of the Islamic State and the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front, a far-left group known for violent acts in Turkey. The Islamic State has previously carried out deadly attacks in the country, including a 2017 nightclub shooting in Istanbul. QUESTION: How might increased security measures during international events impact the daily lives of local residents?
