Senate Democrats push for info on “anti-weaponization” fund, demand hearing

A group of Senate Democrats, led by Sen. Cory Booker, is questioning Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche about a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund established as part of a settlement with former President Trump. The senators are concerned that the Justice Department may have violated its own rules by creating this fund, which they argue could be an act of corruption benefiting Trump and his allies. They have requested Blanche to clarify how the fund aligns with the Justice Manual’s policies on third-party settlements, which are meant to prevent misuse of funds. The Democrats, including Sens. Richard Blumenthal, Adam Schiff, and Sheldon Whitehouse, have asked for a response by July 8. Additionally, they have urged Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley to proceed with a Justice Department oversight hearing while considering Blanche’s nomination for attorney general. The Democrats accuse Blanche of being involved in controversial actions, such as prosecuting Trump’s political opponents and releasing files from the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. QUESTION: How might the establishment of funds like the “anti-weaponization” fund impact public trust in government institutions?
