Central Europe sizzles as heat records are smashed in Switzerland, Denmark and Czech Republic

A severe heat wave has swept across Europe, setting record temperatures from Switzerland to the Czech Republic and even in typically cooler Nordic countries. Denmark recorded its hottest day since 1874, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius. Switzerland and Germany also faced extreme heat, causing infrastructure damage such as burst highways and disrupted travel. In Germany, the heat led to the evacuation of a nursing home, while France’s hospitals struggled with heat-related emergencies despite a slight easing of temperatures. The heat wave has highlighted Europe’s vulnerability to extreme weather, as many areas lack widespread air conditioning.
