Supreme Court cements Trump’s power over agencies long considered independent

The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned a long-standing precedent, allowing presidents to remove members of independent agencies without cause. This decision, a victory for the Trump administration, expands presidential control over government agencies traditionally seen as checks on executive power. In a 6-3 ruling, the court upheld President Trump’s firing of Federal Trade Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter, despite her removal lacking the previously required justification of inefficiency, neglect, or malfeasance. Chief Justice John Roberts emphasized that the president should not be forced to work with those he cannot collaborate with. However, the court maintained the independence of the Federal Reserve for now, allowing board member Lisa Cook to remain until further litigation. This ruling could significantly alter the balance of power between the presidency and independent agencies. QUESTION: How might this increased presidential control over independent agencies impact the way government functions in the future?
