Supreme Court rejects Trump’s appeal of 2022 E. Jean Carroll defamation case

The Supreme Court has upheld a $5 million jury verdict against former President Donald Trump in a defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. The jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s and defaming her in 2022 by dismissing her allegations as false. Trump’s appeal was denied, meaning he must pay the damages. Carroll’s attorney stated that the decision confirms the jury’s unanimous verdict and ends Trump’s attempts to avoid accountability. Trump had argued that certain evidence and testimonies should not have been allowed in the trial, but a federal appeals court ruled that the evidence was properly admitted and did not harm his case. Trump is also appealing another defamation judgment involving Carroll, which requires him to pay $83 million. QUESTION: How might the outcome of this case influence public perceptions of accountability for powerful figures?
