DOJ investigating Sen. Ruben Gallego’s use of campaign funds, sources say

The Justice Department is investigating Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona for potential campaign finance violations. This inquiry, sparked by a whistleblower complaint from Southern California, examines Gallego’s use of campaign funds for family trips since 2019, including destinations like Puerto Rico and Miami. Additionally, records indicate that a political action committee (PAC) associated with Gallego and former Representative Eric Swalwell spent over $37,000 on Super Bowl tickets and meals in 2023. Although the PAC has been terminated, Gallego has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged. He claims the investigation is politically motivated, especially after the Senate Ethics Committee recently cleared him of unrelated accusations. The Justice Department has not commented on the matter. Legal experts note that investigations into campaign fund misuse depend on whether the expenses are linked to campaign activities. QUESTION: How might allegations of campaign finance violations impact a politician’s career and public trust?
