A timeline of the Karen Read case

In June 2025, Karen Read was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, during a retrial in Massachusetts. The jury, after four days of deliberation, found her guilty only of driving under the influence. The case stemmed from a 2022 incident where Read was accused of hitting O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving him to die. Her first trial in 2024 ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. Defense attorneys claimed Read was framed in a cover-up involving law enforcement. On the night of O’Keefe’s death, Read, O’Keefe, and friends were at a bar, and later, Read drove O’Keefe to a friend’s house. Tensions between the couple were evident from text messages and voicemails. O’Keefe was found dead outside a Canton home, and Read expressed concern about a crack in her tail light, wondering if she had hit him. QUESTION: How might the outcome of this trial influence public trust in the legal system and law enforcement?
