Canada to make Eurovision Song Contest debut in 2027

Canada is set to participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, marking the first new country to join since Australia in 2015. This decision follows a year of controversy, with countries like Ireland and Spain withdrawing due to Israel’s involvement. Canada’s entry was made possible after CBC/Radio-Canada became a full member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes the event. Although Canada has never competed before, Canadian artists like Celine Dion have previously represented other countries. Canada will make its debut in the semi-finals in Bulgaria, with CBC/Radio-Canada to announce the selection process for its entry later this year. The inclusion of Canada adds to the list of non-European countries like Israel and Australia that participate in Eurovision. The 2027 contest will be hosted in Sofia, following Bulgarian pop star Dara’s victory this year. The participation of countries that boycotted the 2026 contest remains uncertain. QUESTION: How might Canada’s participation in Eurovision influence the cultural exchange between Europe and North America?
