Guatemala’s new attorney general vows to dismantle predecessor’s ‘repressive’ legacy

Gabriel García Luna, the new attorney general of Guatemala, has vowed to dismantle the “repressive and vengeful” administration of his predecessor, Consuelo Porras. Porras, who faced sanctions from multiple countries, including the U.S., was accused of stifling anti-corruption efforts and persecuting justice officials, activists, and journalists. García Luna aims to restore integrity to the Public Prosecutor’s Office by removing Porras’ network and reviewing cases of those criminalized under her tenure. He is committed to reviving the prosecutorial profession, which suffered under Porras, who dismissed many employees. García Luna is also considering legal action against Porras and her associates for alleged misconduct, including human trafficking. He is reopening cases where corrupt officials were allegedly protected. This change is crucial for Guatemala’s justice system and its relationship with international partners. QUESTION: How might restoring integrity to the justice system impact Guatemala’s future and its citizens’ trust in government?
