How Trump Made ‘Y.M.C.A.’ His Anthem, Despite the Village People and Victor Willis’s Mixed Feelings

President Trump recently expressed his condolences on social media for the passing of Victor Willis, the lead singer of the Village People, claiming that he helped make their song “Y.M.C.A.” a hit again. Trump praised Willis and the group for their support, stating they were with him from the start. However, the Village People have had a more complex relationship with Trump, as they have not always been enthusiastic about their song being used at his rallies. In 2020, the group responded to fans’ concerns by stating they preferred their music to remain apolitical, although they acknowledged Trump’s legal right to use it.
