‘Time for him to pay’ – Carroll calls on Trump to pay $5m after president’s appeal fails

Writer E. Jean Carroll has requested a judge to compel Donald Trump to pay the $5 million in damages awarded by a jury that found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming her. This request follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to review Trump’s appeal. In May 2023, a New York jury awarded Carroll damages for her claim that Trump sexually assaulted her in the 1990s and later defamed her by calling the incident a hoax on social media. Despite Trump’s denial of the allegations, Carroll’s lawyers argue that he has repeatedly delayed payment, which now totals nearly $5.8 million with interest. They assert that after extensive litigation, it is time for Trump to fulfill his financial obligation. Trump’s legal team has not commented, but he continues to deny the accusations on social media. Carroll’s lawyers have included his recent posts in their filings, emphasizing the need for resolution. Additionally, Trump is appealing another jury’s decision that found him liable for defaming Carroll in a separate case, awarding her nearly $84 million. QUESTION: How might the outcome of this legal battle influence public perceptions of accountability for powerful figures?
