U.S. takes down Bosnia 2-0 for second-ever World Cup knockout round win

The United States men’s soccer team advanced to the World Cup round of 16 after defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, marking only their second-ever win in the knockout stage. Folarin Balogun scored the first goal just before halftime, but his game took a turn when he received a red card in the 64th minute for a foul, leaving the U.S. one player short for the remainder of the match. As a result, Balogun will miss the next game against Belgium. Malik Tillman secured the victory with a second goal from a free kick in the 81st minute. This win ended a 10-game losing streak against European teams and was the first World Cup victory over a European team since 2002. The match, held at Levi’s Stadium, was a significant moment for U.S. soccer, as they were favored to win a knockout round match for the first time. Despite early pressure from Bosnia, the U.S. defense, led by Matt Freese, held strong, allowing the team to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. QUESTION: How might the absence of Folarin Balogun in the next match against Belgium impact the U.S. team’s strategy and performance?
