Rescue mission launches to save NASA telescope that’s falling back to Earth

A spacecraft with three arms was launched from the Marshall Islands to save NASA’s Swift Observatory, which is at risk of crashing due to solar storms. The mission, led by Katalyst Space Technologies and costing NASA $30 million, aims to capture and elevate the telescope’s orbit. Swift, launched in 2004, is crucial for observing cosmic events like gamma-ray bursts. If successful, the telescope could resume operations by September. The mission was expedited to prevent Swift from falling beyond recovery by October. Similar efforts might be needed for the Hubble Space Telescope in the future due to similar orbital decay. Despite weather and technical delays, the mission is seen as high-risk but essential to avoid losing the valuable observatory. QUESTION: How might the success or failure of this mission influence future efforts to preserve aging space technology?
