Trump says U.S. keeping current support levels for NATO would be “ridiculous”

President Trump criticized the United States’ “one-sided” relationship with NATO, calling it “ridiculous” just days before a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. He expressed frustration on his Truth Social platform, claiming the relationship is not reciprocal and highlighting that the U.S. spends significantly more on NATO than other member countries. Trump has been vocal about wanting Europe to take more responsibility for its own defense and has suggested the possibility of the U.S. withdrawing from the alliance, though this would require Congressional approval. His comments come amid tensions over European allies’ limited support in the conflict with Iran, where they restricted U.S. base use without prior consultation. Last year, under Trump’s pressure, NATO leaders agreed to increase defense spending to five percent of GDP by 2035. The upcoming summit will gather 32 member states to discuss the future of the alliance, which has been a cornerstone of European stability since its founding in 1949. QUESTION: How might changes in the U.S. relationship with NATO impact global security and alliances in the future?
