A child can drown in seconds. Doctors want more families to be prepared

Recent reports indicate a troubling rise in drowning incidents among U.S. children, with drowning being the leading cause of death for kids aged 1 to 4 and a significant threat to those aged 5 to 14. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes the critical importance of quick rescue and resuscitation. A poignant example is the tragic loss of Stewie Leonard, who drowned at 21 months during a family vacation, prompting his parents to establish a foundation for water safety and swimming lessons. Despite past declines in child drowning deaths due to awareness campaigns and safety measures, recent years have seen an increase, with 865 child drowning deaths reported in 2024. This highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and preventive measures to protect children from such tragedies. QUESTION: Why do you think drowning remains a significant risk for children despite increased awareness and safety measures?
